Eighteen centuries ago in Sriparvata hills, beside the Krishna River, a famous scholar, who was the chief abbot of Nalanda University, Acharya Nagarjuna established a University and meditation centre. Many monks, Nuns and Lay people from far and near came to learn the Dhamma and helped in spreading it all over Southeast Asia. Later this area was called Nagarjuna Sagar. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, on behalf of the central government, is developing a Buddha Park on 285 acres of land in Nagarjuna Sagar.
In July 2004 on one side of their project on the edge of the hill they allocated 35 acres of land for the development of a Vipassana center. Goenkaji has named this centre Dhamma Nagajjuna. The centre enjoys a beautiful view of the reservoir and the surrounding hills.Dhamma Nagajjuna is 160 kms from Hyderabad, which has the nearest airport. From Hyderabad one can go by car (2 hour journey) or bus (3 hour journey) and the centre is just 300 meters from the main road so it is very accessible. However if one does not want to walk the 300m then one can go to Hill Colony bus stop, which is 4km away and take an auto from there. Buses from Chennai go past the centre.
By feb 2005 a Long Term Dhamma Servers area was developed with a Dhamma Hall to seat 50, an Office, Kitchen, Male and Female dormitory and toilets. Later two more buildings were added each consisting of a dormitory and two single rooms with attached toilets – one on the male side and one on the female side. The first 10 day course was held here in August 2005.
In 2006 construction started in the main course area. Since the temperature is very hot in summer and building materials are difficult to get the construction was done with mud blocks and domed roofs. Since the environment there is ideal for long courses it was decided to build individual rooms of 10’x10’ each having its own veranda and toilet. 12 such rooms on the male side, 6 on the female side and a 30’ circular Dhamma Hall was built by July 2007 and the first 10 day course was held there. Since then 6 more rooms have been built on the female side and also a pagoda with 64 cells. The rooms are big enough to accommodate 2 people so 48 students can be accommodated. Every month on the first Wednesday a 10 day course is conducted and apart from Childrens’ course once a month, teenagers courses, Satipattana courses and 10 day special.
At the end of 2011 a pagoda with 72 cells was completed and the first 20 day course was held. At the moment 20 rooms are being constructed in the new male area. They are expected to be ready by march. The first 30 day course is on 30th of April 2014.
